About Us

J-Mart Japanese/Asian Grocery was created with a simple but meaningful goal: to provide our local community with a reliable source for specialty Japanese and Asian foods—the comforting flavors, trusted ingredients, and beloved snacks that are often hard to find but deeply cherished. Whether you’re eager to try something new or searching for the familiar tastes of home, J-Mart is here to bring the flavors of Asia closer to you.

While J-Mart may be a newer business, it is built on over 40 years of firsthand experience with Asian cuisine and culture. Our owner, Brian, grew up in Yokohama, Japan, where he lived for nearly ten years as a military child. After his father’s retirement from the Navy, the family eventually settled in Florida, where they lived for about 30 years before returning to Sparta—his father’s hometown—bringing generations and cultures full circle.

Food has always played a central role in Brian’s life. While living in Florida, his mother worked as a server at a Japanese-style teppanyaki restaurant, where watching chefs cook with skill and flair sparked a deeper appreciation for the craft. During this time, Brian and his older brother AJ both learned to cook—AJ gravitating toward becoming a chef, while Brian developed a passion for baking. Missing Japanese comfort foods like choux cream (custard crème puffs), purin (crème caramel), and other traditional treats, Brian began baking at home so he could enjoy the flavors he grew up with—something he hopes to continue expanding at J-Mart in the future.

Our shelves are thoughtfully stocked to support Japanese, Korean, and other multicultural Asian cuisines. From pantry staples and specialty ingredients to convenient ready-made and pre-packaged meals, J-Mart makes it easy to cook authentically at home. We also carry a wide range of sauces and seasonings—including favorites like Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise and Korean gochujang—to help ensure every dish is full of confidence and flavor.

J-Mart is also a go-to destination for snacks and beverages. Customers can enjoy favorites like Calpico, Ramune, Japanese sodas, teas, and aloe drinks, as well as a curated selection of Japanese beer, sake, wine, and Korean soju. After your meal, treat yourself to sweets and snacks from our shelf and freezer sections, including daifuku mochi, Pocky, shrimp chips, rice crackers, and many other beloved classics.

In the summer of 2020, J-Mart was born out of both personal cravings and community need—a desire to enjoy the foods Brian grew up with, and a call from others in the community who missed their own comfort foods. Dishes like okonomiyaki, sukiyaki, sushi, and traditional desserts carry deep meaning tied to family, culture, and childhood memories, and J-Mart exists to share that joy with anyone willing to explore international flavors.

As a local specialty food source, J-Mart is proud to serve the community with quality products, friendly service, and a genuine love for Japanese and Asian cuisine. J‑Mart is a locally owned and operated Japanese/Asian grocery store located at
112 S Water St, Sparta, WI 54656.
We’re located in downtown Sparta along South Water Street. Nearby landmarks include the Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum and the La Crosse River Trail, which runs through the downtown area. We’re just a short walk from other downtown shops and local businesses.
